In the Fall of 2016, King Lab art teachers Nan Stein and Randi Vega brainstormed with Maggie about creating a mural for their school. After coordinating with the 3rd - 8th grade teachers, times were set aside for classes to visit the mural project "Pop Up Studio" area. Over the coming months, students would come to the tables in the foyer of the school during class time. Younger students worked on monoprinting the background colors and creating the book spines/buildings. Grades 5-8 created self-portraits. Insulation panels were set up against one long wall where Maggie laid out the background compositions on each of the five panels. Using all the supplies produced by the students, Maggie combined everyone's work together, making sure the design would flow from one panel section to the next. Artist Johnna Van Dyke crafted a cat, several mice, a caterpillar and several electronic devices to represent the advent of digital reading, all of which are all included in the work. See if you can find them! Quotes celebrating literacy and diversity were contributed by the art teachers and chosen by the principal, Dr. Jeffrey Brown. The mural was completed, delivered and unveiled in the Fall of 2018 in an all school ceremony.
